In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week.
Mayor Rochelle Robinson presented a proclamation recognizing Douglasville Police Captain Edward Kitchens who was killed in the line of duty in 1983 while in route to a call. Mayor Robinson also posthumously presented the new Douglasville Medal Of Service Award to the Captain.
Captain Kitchens remains the only Douglasville Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty.
Major J.R. Davidson accepted the award on behalf of the Kitchens family.
