Douglasville Parks Staff Makes Case for Afterschool Programs

Post Date:06/27/2019

Recently, Douglasville Parks and Recreation Manager, Chris Bass, joined hundreds of after school program supporters from around the nation in Washington D.C. to promote congressional funding for after school programs.

As part of the After school Alliance’s “After school for All Challenge”, Mr. Bass met with lawmakers to educate and advocate for after school programs and the positive impacts they create on the lives of children.

“Too many Douglas County children, and children from around the nation, leave school each weekday with no adult supervision awaiting them at home,” Bass said, “its not coincidence that those afternoon hours are when these children are more likely to become victims of crime and engage in risky behaviors.”

Most notably, Bass had the opportunity to meet with Congressman John Lewis to discuss the after school initiative and what obstacles parks and recreation departments face across Metro Atlanta. “Federal funding is key for parks and recreation departments to allow safe, healthy, and structured after school programs for children,” he said.

This visit coincides with the Douglasville Parks and Recreation’s redesign project that has recently been finalized. “We’ve been blessed here in Douglasville to have the ability to upgrade some of our parks inventory,” Parks and Recreation Director, Travis Landrum, said. “Having a safe place for kids to learn how to be active and healthy is of the utmost importance. Appealing to the lawmakers in D.C. plays a large role in the sustainability of our local parks.”
