Mayor Interviews Artist Joshua Leonard
The DC Connection Group held its regular meeting at the Cultural Arts Center recently and welcomed Artist Joshua Leonard as special guest speaker. Mayor Rochelle Robinson was honored to be able to interview Mr. Leonard as part of the program and discuss his art, potential career paths in the arts for students and his focus on inclusion and representation in his work.
Leonard’s current project, Team Supreme, focuses on a group of kids with medical differences and superpowers. His hope is to create an entire universe of characters empowered by their differences. He has worked with numerous organizations like Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to connect with differently-abled kids and to highlight the power of the human spirit to thrive in any situation. His team of superheroes ranges from “Zeek”, who was born with Autism, to “Mech”, a young genius bound to a wheelchair by Spina Bifida. Together they turn their disabilities into Super abilities and prove that everyone has value in our society.
“It is so wonderful when we can highlight artists who are not only building successful careers in arts-related fields but who are also using their talents and creativity to lift up people who are often overlooked and marginalized”, said Mayor Robinson. “Mr. Leonard is truly an inspiring individual and we are excited to see where his talents take him.”
