Planning Commission

The Planning Commission is a recommending body that considers and reviews zoning decisions for Mayor and Council. The Planning Commission is responsible for the review and authorization of development permits, rezonings, Special Land Use Permits and UDO (Unified Development Ordinance) text amendments. All members shall be appointed to posts by the Mayor and Council and each member shall represent a single council ward.

All members shall be and remain residents of the city throughout their terms of office. Each member shall continue to reside in the ward he represents throughout his term. No member of the planning commission shall serve as a member or officer of any other zoning board, planning and zoning commission or other like body. Planning Commission meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month where Commissioners will hold public hearings and make their recommendations.

Terms are typically 5-years, unless an individual is being appointed to fill an unexpired term that was previous vacated. Members shall be limited to two consecutive terms or ten years of service, once one or both of these limits are reached, no member shall be reappointed. All members of the Planning Commission shall serve without compensation but may be reimbursed for actual expenses accrued for training. Planning Commission posts are as follows:

  • Ward 3, Post 1 - Ralph Benton
  • Ward 3, Post 2 - Joy Bates
  • Ward 4 - Francisco Artley
  • Ward 5 - Keith Burnett

Meetings: The Planning Commission shall meet in regular session at 6 pm on the first Tuesday of each calendar month, except that no regular meeting shall be had:

(1) in the month of November; or

(2) when the planning commission has no business to entertain due to lack of applications; or

(3) whenever the regular meeting is cancelled by the Community Development Director.
